Pleeq: Image bookmarking made easy

Pleeq: Image bookmarking made easy

Pleeq is a new image bookmarking site which makes it easy to save images from anywhere on the Internet using a handy little bookmarklet. Founded by two brothers living in Russia, Alexander Deplov handles the site’s design and CSS, while Dimitry Deplov is the man behind the code and CSS.

After saving the bookmarklet to your bookmarks bar, when you visit a page that has images, click the bookmarklet, then click the image that you wish to save to Pleeq, and a new window will open where you can add tags to your bookmark and save it.

So what inspired the Deplov brothers to launch Pleeq? They told The Next Web.

“90% of people perceive information through their eyes. People enjoy beautiful paintings, architecture, fashion or illustration. Beautiful things are inspiring us. We have created Pleeq that everyone has the opportunity to quickly and conveniently save their favorite picture or photo in their own gallery, to have access to it later, share with friends or other users.”

There’s no limit to how you can use Pleeq. Because each image post is accompanied by a link to the original source, Pleeq can be used as a visually attractive alternative to Delicious or Diigo, bookmarking your favourite posts, sites, or images. Photographers can use it as another means of sharing their own personal work with the Pleeq community. And of course, Pleeq joins sites like Tumblr, Ffffound, Pinterest and We Heart It as a great way to save your favourite images from across the Web.

What sets Pleeq apart from these other sites is the way it presents the images. Pleeq’s layout is quite reminiscent of Google+ photo posts, but the images that appear underneath your own ‘Pleeqed’ image have been shared by other users, using the same tags.

Pleeq is pretty bare bones at the moment. You can bookmark images using the bookmarklet, and check out what other people have bookmarked themselves, in the Explore section. From there you can view other users’ profiles, and click on tags to see all images uploaded to the site under that label.

After you use the site for a while, tagging enough photos, Pleeq will be able to detect what kind of images you’re interested in, so when you go to any other user’s page, and click the ‘You will like it’ button, it will display what other users have uploaded to your preferred tags. You can also save images bookmarked by others to your profile, and share the images on Twitter and Facebook, but that’s about the extent of the interaction on Pleeq at the moment.

There’s no real social aspect to the site at the moment, but it’s definitely in the works. The ability to follow other users as well as comment on images are on the way, along with tag searches, a Chrome extension, and iOS support. But for now, you can always just add Pleeq’s public RSS feed to apps like Flipboard to get a gorgeous, visual exploration of the images on your iPad.
