OmmWriter: A rare treat for Windows, now available

Updated at the foot of the post.

Here at TNW we love OmmWriter, the wonderful writing application that has captivated tens of thousands of Mac users around the world. However, as TNW’s resident Microsoft user, I was out of luck as the software was built for Macs.

No more. I should perhaps say, almost no more. The Windows version of OmmWriter Dāna is just about complete, and the company was kind enough to send me a copy of it to play with.

The application recently finished a stern QA scrubbing, and so I expected to run like a charm. I was not disappointed. We called OmmWriter one of the best 10 apps for writers in 2010, with our own Courtney Myers saying this on the application:

OmmWriter is a zen attempt to recapture our ability to concentrate. “If you are a scriptwriter, blogger, journalist, copywriter, poet or just someone who enjoys writing” OmmWriter says, “Welcome back to concentrating.” See a video of the app in action here.

What makes the app special? It is nothing like Word, or Pages, or any other word processor application you have ever used. Instead, it looks like this:

The round buttons are options menus, and the text area can be expanded to fit your fancy. The background can be changed to a number of color-themed options. Light music plays in the background as you type. You can select a sound to play when you strike a key, transforming your keyboard into a typewriter, or a fancy calculator. It is writing zen.

It might not help you write your next report, but it will surely help you write the next chapter in your novel.

When will it drop for Windows? According to the team, they are hoping to release the application in the very near future (weeks, not months), but no final date has been set.

Update: OmmWriter is now available. You can download it from the OmmWriter site.
