Soon, just about anybody will be able to make an Apple Watch band

Style is subjective, but Apple will soon let anybody make bands for Apple Watch. Through a distributor, the company is selling magnetic lugs that attach to the watch, opening the platform up to third-party manufacturers.

Currently, only stainless steel slugs for the 38mm and 42mm Apple Watch are available. The rest — Space Grey, Yellow Gold, Rose Gold and Space Black — are currently not available.

If you’re worried about finding some crazy bands in stores, fear not; all who make bands for Apple Watch are asked to adhere to the band design guidelines. To verify authenticity, Apple’s official slugs are etched with “Made for Apple Watch.”

Sadly (or maybe not) for those with clever ideas about what might make an interesting watch band, the lugs are only available for bulk orders to those with commercial accounts with Apple distribution partner Avnet.
