Sprint image appears on Apple’s website, confirms it as an iPhone carrier

If you thought reports that Sprint was betting on the iPhone were a little far-fetched, the appearance of the Sprint logo on the Apple website – before the “Lets Talk iPhone” event has even begun – confirms that the US carrier will be offering the iPhone in the very near future.

iDownloadBlog made the spot, noting the logo appears when users are asked to select their chosen mobile operator when on the iPhone ordering page. When the Apple Store returns after the event this evening, the logo should appear next to AT&T and Verizon in the listings:

Yesterday we reported that Sprint’s CEO has reportedly told the Board of Directors that it will need to purchase 30.5 million iPhones over the next 4 years. The deal, worth $20 billion, would keep Sprint in the red until 2014. The figure would equate to $655 per phone if taken as an average number, indicating the devices would be higher-end models.

Before today, Sprint has been known to be a staunch supporter of Android devices, launching a number of high-end smartphones including the HTC Evo 4G, the first Android 4G smartphone. The decision to back Apple suggests that not only will we see the iPhone 4S today, we are also likely to see the company carry a cheaper iPhone 4 to tempt consumers in the entry-level smartphone market.
