Freezly proves that there is no such things as a free lunch

freezlyA few years ago, while drinking beer with friends, we thought it might be a good idea to set-up a ‘Free Beer Finder Services’. We figured there must be a networking event or art gallery opening with free drinks every single night of the week. All you needed was an online service with a calendar and a bunch of volunteers to share tips on where to go this evening. We never set-up the service, of course, but I still think there might be a market for free beer.

Freezly has just launched in public beta and goes even further than finding you free beer. They simply mention everyhting that is available for free online. Rather than waiting for volunteers to submit free deals they “developed an automated system to identify giveaways, filter out soliciting content, and display the giveaways in a fashionable manner”.

What that means is they just display all tweets that contain predefined words such as ‘free’ and ‘giveaway’. They also filter out spam, obvious promotions and bots to make life easier for you.

There reasoning is probably that there is no such thing as a free lunch but there is a lot of free stuff available on the web. You just have to know how to find it.

If you are looking forward to having a truckload of free stuff delivered to your door next week you are going to be disappointed though. Most of listings on their site are of the type “Win a free macBook pro” or “free T-Shirt giveaway to the first 10 subscribers”. Getting stuff for free or signing up for services with a chance to get something are very different things as far as I’m concerned.

Which just goes to show that there really is no such thing as a free lunch.
