Try This: TekTrak. Find your lost iPhone, save your battery from GPS drain

We’ve heard a story or two about people losing their iPhones and the problems that it can cause. There aren’t a slew of options for recovering a lost iPhone, and the ones that exist tend to drain battery life because of constant polling for a GPS signal. TekTrak is the latest one that we’ve heard about and it’s interesting in how it works.

TekTrak is lost phone tracking that will only cost you $4.99 per year. All you need to do is download the application, create a login and then you can track your phone from any web browser by heading to the TekTrak website. The interesting things that we like about TekTrak are the value-added features. Instead of simply offering real-time location tracking, TekTrak takes a few more steps:

  • Location history
  • Background operation
  • GPS polling saves battery
  • Remote ring or push notifications
  • Adjustable interval checking

While TekTrak is being aimed directly as an alternative to MobileMe, it’s worth noting that there are other options out there as well. iHound, for instance, offers many of the same features as TekTrak, but also adds the ability to remotely wipe your data. However, it is more expensive with its base plan starting at $9.99 per year.

Regardless of competition, it’s still worth taking a look to see if TekTrak is the better solution for you. You can download it directly from the App Store or there is a link on the TekTrack page to use it twice for free before committing to a one year coverage. If you’ve only been using your MobileMe service for tracking your iPhone, it might be high time to consider saving yourself some money.
