Anyone for tennis? Wimbledon’s very first iPad app arrives ahead of 2013 championships

Anyone for tennis? Wimbledon’s very first iPad app arrives ahead of 2013 championships

The very first official dedicated iPad app to provide Wimbledon tennis championship coverage is now available to download for free, joining a new version of its iOS and Android apps updated in time for this year’s tournament.

The iPad app aims to give viewers “unique footage” of the competition as well as working as a ‘second screen’ for viewers watching on TV or court side.

“With content displayed in the context of the grounds, navigation is via an interactive photographic map, with color-coded dropped pins indicating where different types of action are taking place. Utilizing pinch-and-zoom, a user can then hone in on a specific court or match, at which point the app slides into its second screen trousers and serves up additional stats and insights,” the All England Lawn Tennis Club, said in a blog post on Thursday.

Notable features of the app include the things you’d expect to see like live scores and results, all the statistics you could want and scheduled upcoming games and individual player profiles.

However, it also goes a bit beyond this and offers up 360-degree photos and videos of the grounds and its historic locations, along with aerial videos of the ground captured by drones.

Tennis fans will also find live video streams of the games and three dedicated Wimbledon radio channels dedicated to coverage of center court and court number one along with live time-lapse photos from the tournament.

The app is available to download now for iPads and will work with iOS 5 or higher.

In addition to releasing a dedicated iPad app, the organisation also just three days ago released updated versions of its iPhone and Android apps adding the ability to favorite up to 10 players and receive general (and player) alerts to last year’s offering.

The Wimbledon tennis tournament will run from June 24 – July 7 this year.
