Major UK supermarket chain Tesco rolls out free Wi-Fi in stores nationwide

Major UK supermarket chain Tesco today announced it will roll out its free Wi-Fi service to all of its Tesco Extra stores across the UK, which will be powered by the UK broadband and mobile operator O2.

Visitors to Tesco Extra stores will get free, unlimited access to the in-store wireless Internet service simply by signing up with their Clubcard number. For those who don’t have or want a Clubcard, the service will be free for 15 minutes every 24 hours – perfect for those who want to check pricing and details of products whilst they shop.

Tesco says:

So far, customers have been using it to read product reviews and compare prices while they shop. The Wi-Fi also allows users to access their Clubcard account online to check their points and receive e-vouchers.

The rollout will see Tesco become the first major UK supermarket to offer free wireless Internet for its customers, having found that 82% of those that tested it would “definitely use the service again” in a recent customer survey.

Interestingly, the survey also revealed that 71% of customers used their smartphone to access the Wi-Fi, 11% a tablet with almost one in ten people using their laptop.

With other supermarkets looking to introduce iPads to assist shoppers, the rollout of free Wi-Fi could be the first step in helping customers get the most of their shopping experience.
