You’ve no doubt heard all about London’s answer to Silicon Valley…Silicon Roundabout. Well, this Sunday (30th October) will see the second Silicon Milkroundabout take place, a jobs fair that seeks to match developers with UK startups.
Running from 11am-5pm at The Old Truman Brewery in East London, there will be over 150 companies hiring at Silicon MilkRoundabout this weekend. With an estimated 500 technical jobs up for grabs, salaries will be ranging from £20k to £100k.
The good people at Silicon Milkroundabout and Adzuna, a job ads search engine, have pulled together some UK tech job stats in the build up to the event on Sunday. There are 3,134 graduate technical jobs available in the UK, and over 1,000 in London currently listed on Adzuna. The average Banking IT salary is £57k, 19% higher than the average tech startup salary.
Actually, you’re best just looking at the this little infographic they’ve pulled together on 2011 Tech Job Trends:

Not bad at all, I believe. I used to work as a freelancer at http://www.peopleperhour.com and now I am also a client.
Jobs are easily done through online marketplaces like these. I strongly support the idea of working worldwide.

LikeThose salaries are pitiful, at least for experienced people. You better have something better to offer than that.

LikeNice piece, and loving the silicon milkroundabout push to attract tech talent away from Banks etc.
One thing to note though - although Adzuna are probably pulling the best data they can, there's over 100,000 CS Students in England, Wales & Scotland (source: HESA) and, therefore, many more than 7k CS Grads per yr. Every year I struggle to fill Graduate CS roles - even when working for Google it was near on impossible. And it looks as though Silicon Milkroundabout are experiencing the same. It's more an issue of educating CS Students / Graduates of what to look for and where & when to look for it. Demand is out-stripping supply by a long chalk for CS Grads, and has been for a number of years, not the other way around. So the snazzy infograph is a little bit misleading IMHO. #justsaying.
