Google Promotes Its Own Safety Tips On ‘Safer Internet Day’

Google is supporting the EU’s Safer Internet Day by promoting its own Tips For Online Safety for web users looking for details about the event.

Google is listing its advice page above search listings for Safer Internet Day to remind parents and families of the steps they can take to stay safe online.

Details of how to customise Google Safe Search including activation of the Safe Search Lock, which enables parent to check at a glance that it is in force due to the highly visible coloured Google balls, are included on the page.

Also featured are links to other UK organisations as Google aims to promote action and awareness around internet safety including Beatbullying, Thinkuknow and Mumsnet.

Safer Internet Day is marked across Europe and the rest of the world and is co-funded by the European Union.  Its 2010 theme is Think B4 U Post which aims to remind children and teenagers that they can control their online identity.

In the UK a cartoon-based online safety campaign aimed at children as young as five has launched today.

Elsewhere, in Strasbourg the EU’s Commissioner for Data Protection Viviane Reding is today planning to voice her concerns around Facebook’s recent changes to its privacy settings making it easier to access to personal information on the social network despite growing pressure to improve online data protection.
