Gideon Yu has had quite an illustrious career in technology, having been the former CFO at Facebook and before that, YouTube. Yu led the negotiations for the $1.65B sale of the latter company to Google. Last year, he decided to take the leap to sports and joined the San Franisco 49ers as the Chief Strategy Officer.

In less than a year, Yu has gotten a promotion and it’s a big one. Today, the 49ers announced that Gideon Yu is now the President and Co-Owner of the team.

The San Francisco 49ers became the toast of Silicon Valley again after a stellar year that saw its head coach Jim Harbaugh win NFL’s “Coach of the Year” award in his first season at the helm.

Unfortunately for those of us in downtown San Francisco, Yu is working hard on a Santa Clara stadium project, taking the 49ers further away from its core fanbase.

Soon after Google+ released brand pages, all 30 MLB teams signed up. It looks like the NBA is following that trend, except for one team.

For whatever reason, the New Jersey Nets are the lone NBA team not to have a verified page on Google+. That’s a darn shame for a team partially owned by Jay-Z. Maybe it’s because the team is working on moving to Brooklyn and has no time for Google+. Either that or someone forget to tell them to set up a page.

Regardless, the Google+ team has let us know that you can now circle all of the NBA teams (sans the Nets of course), plus the NBA itself:

In typical Google+ fashion, it has made a big shared circle of NBA properties that you can follow in one click.

The lockout shortened NBA season of 66 games is set to start on Christmas Day.

Most news aggregation apps are for techies. Pulling in your favorite technology news is facilitated by a whole host of apps, but for us sports fans, we’re not so lucky.

As soon as you open the Team Stream app it will ask to pick up your current location. Teams around you will be shown at the top if you happen to live in a city where you follow the local teams.

I’m from Philadelphia, and follow all things Philadelphia. Currently, I visit ESPN.com and Philly.com to get my news, but Bleach Report’s curators do an awesome job of pulling all team news into one place, and then displaying them inside of the Team Stream app.

Once you’ve chosen your favorite MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, MMA, Boxing, WWE, Nascar, and College teams or players, you’ll be able to read all of the aggregated news about them thanks to Bleacher Report. When news happens, you’ll get a push notification, driving you back into the app.

Along with news articles and current standings, Team Stream pulls in tweets from players, coaches, and teams themselves, which makes for a nice steady stream of content for those who love to keep up with everything sports.

Upon downloading the app, I was alerted about three relevant pieces of team news within the first ten minutes. This might be a lot for you, so the app lets you turn the push notifications off.

Google and Cricket’s IPL (India Premier League) have announced an agreement that will stream Cricket’s most prestigious annual tournament across the web to a worldwide audience.

From March, 60 matches will be shown and YouTube are on the lookout for a global sponsor as well as local ones.

While this is the first sports event YouTube has agreed to broadcast, YouTube has streamed live concerts before, namely U2′s in October which had 10million viewers worldwide.

Bruce Daisley, Google UK’s leader for YouTube told Marketing Magazine: “We’re keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There’s a real interest in live events, so we’re excited.”

As a commenter rightly points out, it’s a win-win solution for both parties involved, it will increase exposure to sports unable to achieve international tv deals but will also open peoples eyes to the potential for YouTube far more than a simple video sharing site. Both parties are likely to win on the sponsorship deals front.
