In the past month I’ve traveled to Berlin, Amsterdam, London and Hawaii and I keep hearing the same debate over and over again: ‘How can we become the next Silicon Valley?’

The answer is: You Can’t.

Having observed the special sauce that makes up Silicon Valley, I’ve found it’s a delicate balance of a number of attributes that cannot easily be replicated. That doesn’t mean to say other places in the world should stop investing in startup culture or entrepreneurship; I believe one day other tech cities in the world could be bigger than Silicon Valley in terms of output of high growth technology startups, because other places have attributes and industries that the Valley does not. But, for now, Silicon Valley is number one and it will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

The number of governments around the world who are trying to replicate Silicon Valley is astonishing; Iraq’s minister for digital wants to create a Silicon Baghdad, there’s Startup Chile attracting entrepreneurs from around the world to go through their government initiated startup program, and now adverts exist at San Francisco’s airport for London’s ‘Tech City’ also known as Silicon Roundabout. But that’s not all, as the cost of innovation decreases, people all over the world are getting ideas off the ground with a wifi connection and a laptop, in places you wouldn’t even imagine; Rwanda, Tanzania, The Philippines all have growing tech scenes and why not? If one of these countries creates the next Google or Facebook think of the wealth and job creation (not to mention tax proposition) it emits for those countries.

London has publishing and finance, New York has advertising and fashion, Iceland has thermal energy – why are entrepreneurs in these places following the The Samwer brothers’ Berlin based model of replicating startups in Germany that become a success in the US? They should be innovating around industries and attributes they already have. These industries are inevitably going to need drastic innovation if they want to survive and startup innovation around old industry is perhaps how other locations around the planet could one day conquer world title as highest producer of innovative startups in the world over the high tech, tunnel vision focused nature of the Valley.

And focusing tightly on high tech has been part of Silicon Valley’s success, there are no outside distractions; since moving to the Valley from London I check Hacker News more times a day than the BBC News- an indication of where my attention is focused and it’s humbling how Valley based entrepreneurs sacrifice having a life for a few years whilst they build, grow and exit their company. The goal is clear: acquisition or IPO, they will sacrifice anything and everything to get there and it works. Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger were grinding for just over 500 days before they sold to Facebook to $1billion – a small amount of life to sacrifice for not having to ever worry about money again for the rest of their lives.

But focus is just one of the surface traits making up the Valley’s success, deeper attributes create a delicate ecosystem where one dynamic feeds into another almost living symbiotically to create an irreplaceable machine, churning out the most well engineered and designed startups on the planet.

History

Ironically for a country as young as the USA, much of the Valley’s success can be traced back to the history of the Bay Area Gold Rush of 1849; The dramatic population increase and new wealth creation demanded the need for the Transcontinental railroad that connected California with the central and Eastern states of America.

It was built with the investment of Leland Stanford, a business man who came West during the gold rush also the founder of Stanford University. Stanford built the university in 1885 using the profits he had made from building the Transcontinental railroad and now Stanford is the institution that now feeds much of the unmatchable talent into Silicon Valley.

Funding Ecosystem

The unique startup funding ecosystem in Silicon Valley is also what makes it so special, both investors as well as entrepreneurs are big risk takers and deals get done fast. Both London and Berlin based startups told me how they recently had to travel to Silicon Valley to get early stage seed funding because it was non-existant in their home cities. Italian startup Glancee came to the Valley and just over a year later it was acquired by Facebook. Startups on accelerators like Y Combinator, 500 Startups and I/O Ventures are almost guaranteed an exit to one of the big four; Facebook, Apple, Google or Microsoft or at least an exit in the form of at least an acqui-hire.

It’s a small world

San Francisco is a small place; with a population just under one million on the peninsular, compared with London’s 10 million, there’s not much separation between work and play. Your friends are also the people you do business with and you are nearly always one degree of separation away from anyone you want to know. This makes finding the right people for the right deal, fast and easy. Entrepreneurs are living, eating, sleeping and breathing startups in ‘Startup Mansions’ -shared accommodations that become meccas for startup life. Blackbox, The Glint, Rainbow and Factory O are all mansions stretching from Los Altos to San Francisco home to you people who are executing on their world changing ideas.

It’s brains, not clothes that matter

Silicon Valley is one of the only places in the world where young (mostly) men in their 20s are doing billion dollar business deals in flip-flops and hoodies. The recent controversy of the Wall Street Banker calling out Mark Zuckerberg for being immature for choosing a suit over a hoodie when he rang the NASDAQ IPO Bell is a sign of the banker being a luddite and not understanding that in the Valley brains power is the overriding measure of success, not clothing styles. Venture Capitalists, namely Dave McClure, are also donning flip-flops, Bermuda shorts and hoodies, In London dressing down would be a sign of disrespect.

Silicon Valley would never spend time talking about how they want to become the next Silicon Valley

They would just execute and become Silicon Valley. It astonishes me Europe is having the same argument over and over again. Every time I’m back in Europa the debate seems stagnant, like the kid at school that can’t get over the chip on his shoulder- well guess what Europe? You’ve had your day, the USA is the world super power now and Silicon Valley is no 1. You can either moan about it or focus on innovating around the attributes you already have. I’ve seen some great publishing and food startups in London, ideas that I don’t think the valley could come up with because the problems in those industries only exist in London.

With all this said I’m a great believer in promoting global entrepreneurship and my argument that Silicon Valley doesn’t always think beyond the gold rush of making a billion dollars versus solving world-chaning problems still stands. But I urge you, rest of the world to save your time complaining about how you want to be the next Silicon Valley, because it won’t happen, instead don’t replicate, recreate and put your energy into being the best you, you can be.

I didn’t know much about the tech scene in Israel before I left the states for Microsof’t Think Next conference. The country, often referred to as “Startup Nation”, has its stuff together when it comes to building a powerhouse of an ecosystem for technology.

When I visited Mexico City, I wrote a piece called “There’s No Magic In Silicon Valley“, which was a response to some of the discussions I was overhearing about how developers in the country dream of moving to the bay area to realize their dreams.

My point was, and still is, that it doesn’t matter where you are as long as you’re creating something of value. An ecosystem of developers can be created anywhere, you just have to “want” it. Unlike Mexico City, the startup culture in Israel is extremely open and supportive. The country doesn’t fear failure the same way that other places in the world do.

While saying that Silicon Valley isn’t “magical”, that’s not to say that I don’t believe it’s one of the most amazing places to start something on Earth, because it is. The real advantage that the United States has when it comes to starting a company and a product and getting traction immediately is our built-in nature to want to try new technology.

Built in audience, built in beta testers

Silicon Valley doesn’t just have a tight-knit community of idea people who build things. The unique thing about places like San Francisco and New York City is that there are a whole lot of early adopters who are ready to play with whatever we create. It’s like having a massive focus group that will help usher your product to consumers organically.

That layer of adopters is something that Israel is missing. There’s a disconnect between consumers and developers, therefore most of the products that make big waves in the country are security-based or big data focused. While entrepreneurs have great relationships with each other in Israel, there is definitely not the built-in audience for new consumers products that there are in the States.

Popular apps take the same path

If you go back and think about how you found out about each of your favorite apps and sites, it probably happens very similarly. A geeky friend of yours tells you about it, you read about it on a site like The Next Web, or you see a random Facebook or Twitter post linking to it. It’s a very rhythmic process that appears to be something very unique to the United States.

When it comes to San Francisco and New York City especially, developers have a network of friends and former colleagues that they can test out ideas on. Basically, engineers and developers don’t just sit in a room, they actually get out there and interact with non-techies. That hybrid relationship is the crux of what many may see as “magical”.

While it’s definitely unique, it’s not something that other places like Israel can’t catch up on. Even before I started writing here, I would have friends send me links to things they’ve created all of the time, asking me what I thought.

In addition, we have a unique postion, one that I’ve held, called “Community Manager”, that serves as the face of small companies, reaching out to people and listening to their feedback.

Adopting Community is the next step for places like Israel

To take the next step, Israel has to become a player in consumer technology. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for the next Instagram, Foursquare, or Twitter to come from this beautiful country. There’s no lack of talent, an interesting culture for fundraising, there just needs to be more of an involvement from the “regular joe”.

If Instagram hadn’t of had feedback on its first iteration, Burbn, who knows what would have happened. It’s the learnings that the company made that sent them on the direction that they took. A vibrant community of people who are waiting to try the next cool thing is extremely valuable for Silicon Valley, and it’s a trend that we’ll start seeing in Israel, Mexico City, and every place in between.

While I’m attending the Apptualizate hackathon and conference in Mexico City, I’ve been observing how some of the local developers here see the developer ecosystem in the United States, and specifically in Silicon Valley.

I’ve heard the word “magical” used a few times and I truly believe that this line of thinking is a big part of the developer ecosystem divide globally. Just as every actor or actresses’ dream is to pick up everything and move to Los Angeles to kick off their career, those outside of the United States think that the only way that their ideas will ever get noticed, or funded, is to pick up and move.

That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Over the past ten years, in the United States, we’ve watched how our country has embraced entrepreneurialism on a massive scale. Our President talks about it, we make movies about it, and we’re starting to bring the notion into our schools.

Needless to say, nothing about any of those things has to do with magic, or one particular part of the country. Startup culture, or the idea that anyone can create something from scratch and make a living from it if they work hard enough, is becoming a part of our national fabric. It’s becoming who we are, and I think it’s really exciting.

In Mexico City, there aren’t a lot of meetups, tweetups, or bars full of smart people exchanging ideas like there are in the states. In fact, sharing an idea with someone you’re not related to or best friends with is something the developers here don’t do at all. The thought that some random person could “steal” their idea keeps them from interacting with one another in a way that could benefit them as an individual and as a participant in a healthy developer ecosystem.

I’ll be giving a talk this evening on this topic and plan on flipping the script by asking questions of the 140 developers who have been locked in a room (not literally) for the past 26 hours creating cool things for potential clients. I’m hoping that by sharing some of my experience and observations on the culture in the US, they can go and create their own culture and ecosystem.

The truth of the matter is that there’s no magic involved at all in becoming successful with technology. It takes a lot of hard work, many failures, and the ability to get right back up once you’ve been knocked down a few times. A great support system of other companies, mentors, advisers, and understanding family members definitely helps too. The magic honestly comes from within.

The part that I’ve always loved about working at startups, and now covering them, is that at the end of the day we all want to see each other succeed. We might be tough on our “competitors” now and again but that’s because we expect everyone to give their best. When things don’t go well, we pick each other up and try again.

Everyone talks about becoming the “Silicon Valley of XXXX” and that’s the wrong way to go about it. I love what’s happening in New York City right now, it excites me every time we write about a company who makes the city its home. It’s further proof that it doesn’t matter where you are geographically, as long as you have the talent, heart, and passion to create, you’re going to do just fine.

I think Mexico City will end up doing just fine too, and it won’t require a pilgrimage to a certain handful of cities in California.

Rent in the San Francisco area is pretty high, but that’s not stopping Kurt Varner from chasing his dreams to build his startup DailyToaster.

Instead of asking friends-of-friends for a place to crash, the Los Angeles native has decided to work out of coworking spaces and sleep in his Honda full-time. Varner discussed the cost-cutting move to fulfill his dreams of Internet stardom on his blog today:

In two days, I will leave my cushy life in Los Angeles to live from my car in Silicon Valley. Yep, that’s right. From my car. It’s going to be one of the most adventurous things I’ve ever done, and will be a challenge to say the least.

Why am I doing it? Trust me, a lot of serious thought went into this decision. The main reason being that the Bay Area is the center of the startup universe, and I know that locating there is best for both my startup and me as an entrepreneur. That being the case, I’m going to do whatever it takes to be in that environment.

Varner explains his app idea like this:

Never oversleep again. DailyToaster is a simple alarm system that guarantees to get you out of bed on time.

I’m intrigued, so I signed up to be notified of its launch in April. The part that’s more interesting to me is that Kurt is going balls to the wall in his effort to make his dream a reality. His wife will be staying behind in Los Angeles, lucky for her, and his Honda will be outfitted with a sleeping bag for sleeping purposes. Not only will he save money on rent, but he says that it will help him obtain better perspective on life at the same time:

Furthermore, a non-obvious benefit of living from my car is gaining a minimalistic perspective on life. Everyday, I take for granted things like a warm bed, shower, and home cooked meals. It’s easy to lose sight of how privileged we are as middle class Americans, but hundreds of millions of people are without these basic things. I’m no adamant philanthropist, but it can’t hurt to better appreciate the little things in life.

While we hear numerous tales of “eating ramen” and shacking up with four or five colleagues when starting a company, this is pretty extreme. You have to give him credit though, and he promises to stick to his guns on staying in the car.

How is he going to shower, you ask? Duh!:

I’m really going to rely on the startup community to help me out here. My plan is to post $1 listings on Zaarly and to ask for showers through Twitter.

There’s nothing odd with tweeting out requests to use people’s showers, is there? I guess nothing is odd when you decide to sleep in your car to support your company and then tell the world about it in a blog post.

Good luck Kurt, I’d be more than happy to help you find a shower. It’s going to get smelly in that car.

Along with discussing some of the coming trends for 2012, the most savvy investors of last year will be recognized during TheFunded.com‘s Entrepreneur Investor Award show. The awards are chosen by prominent entrepreneurs, and will be announced at the event on January 19th.

Only 175 tickets have been made available to the public, making this installment of the event the most exclusive in its history. You can buy your ticket now and get 15% off by using the code TNW.

Founder Showcase:

When: January 19th, 2012
Where: Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus, 1065 La Avenida Street, Bldg 1, Mountain View, CA
Tickets: Buy your tickets here, and use the code TNW for a 15% discount

During the event there will be a seed-stage pitch competition featuring companies that are younger than two years old and have received less than $250k in funding to date. The application period has ended, but if you have a startup and would like to be a part of the action, you can still buy a table at the event and have a shot to be included in the table pitch competition, that will feature the top three startups as voted by attendees.

The lineup of speakers is quite impressive, and include:

Mark Suster, General Partner at GRP Partners and Writer at Both Sides of the Table
Mike Maples, Jr., Managing Partner at FLOODGATE
Dave McClure, Founding Partner at 500 Startups
Adeo Ressi, Founder of the Founder Institute and TheFunded.com
Bruce K. Taragin, Managing Director of Blumberg Capital
Scott Hartley, Venture Investor, Mohr Davidow Ventures

Being so early in the year, this is a perfect opportunity to network with the brightest minds and most powerful investors in technology on the west coast. Grab your tickets now and we’ll see you there!

We also said goodbye to some CEOs and tech founders, and Facebook stayed in the social networking driver’s seat.

Lets get into the year that was in Silicon Valley.

Steve Jobs

What can we say about Steve Jobs that hasn’t already been said? The founder and most memorable leader of Apple resigned as CEO in August, making way for the Tim Cook era. In his resignation letter, Jobs didn’t give an actual reason for leaving Apple, but suggested that Apple move on with its succession plan:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

Many assumed that the reason for Jobs stepping down was his failing health, and unfortunately that turned out to be the case when he passed away on October 6th. As a Silicon Valley icon, Steve Jobs brought Apple back to life, which launched the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 this year, showing that hard work and determination can indeed pay off. Even after his death, Jobs continued to make headlines, with his biography shattering records and topping charts.

Read all about Apple’s entire 2011 in our rewind.

IPOs

2011 was a big year for going public in the tech space. With much of the year being filled with rumblings about whether Facebook would go public or not, four other companies took the huge step of going for the IPO.

Here’s a timeline of big-name 2011 IPO filings:

January: LinkedIn found a way to make money, so the time came to go public.

February: Pandora went from nearly being toast, to becoming to the toast of tech.

June: Groupon took the world by storm with its group buying model, but is the sizzle gone?

July: Zynga relies heavily on Facebook for its revenue and game players, but that didn’t stop them from going for the IPO hailmary.

Unfortunately, most of these public offerings ended up tanking, but that shouldn’t stop companies from taking the leap next year.

Facebook and Yelp are the two companies to watch out for in IPO land next year.

Silicon Shuffles

A few major notable founders and CEOs left or were booted from their positions in 2011. Some of them included companies that were synonymous with “Web 2.0″, which was the beginning of the social web.

In March, Kevin Rose decided to resign from the company he started in 2004, Digg. After a short stint as CEO of the company in 2010, Rose decided to give the big goodbye to Digg this year. In many ways, Kevin Rose was a symbol of how cool it was to be an Internet entrepreneur, serving as a way more social and popular version of Mark Zuckerberg. His resignation came after an unsuccessful attempt to revive Digg’s community with a new version that everyone ended up hating. Don’t worry about Rose, he got funding for his new startup, Milk.

In September, Carol Bartz was fired as CEO of Yahoo!, over the phone no less. With Yahoo! seemingly having no leadership or direction, the rest of the year was filled with speculation on when Yahoo! would sell, and who it would sell to. Some of the names thrown around? Google, Microsoft, Aol, and Alibaba. No sale yet, and don’t hold your breath in 2012.

HP, which Steve Jobs had noted was “being dismembered, destroyed” fired its CEO this year, Leo Apotheker. However, Apotheker’s tenure didn’t even last a year and was replaced by former eBay CEO Meg Whitman.

But it wasn’t all about high profile departures, as Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey came back to the company in March to split time as an adviser as well as CEO of his Valley startup Square, putting 8 hour days in at both companies.

Facebook gets competition, remains king of social

The existence of a Google social network had been rumored for years, but this year we finally got to see what the company had come up with. In a huge direction change for the company, Google has decided to go all-in with social by launching Google+. In doing that, it shut down previous social failure Google Buzz.

Even though Google+ shows strong growth, Facebook remained the king of social in 2011. The company told us that they had 800 million users, but what was more impressive, it had 500 million users on the site at once.

Facebook didn’t stand pat amidst numerous privacy issues and launched numerous new features this year including Timeline. But what made Facebook the real king of Silicon Valley in 2011? The fact that it could bank 1 billion dollars in net revenue this year. Growth in users is one thing, features are another, but bringing in that type of bank puts it light-years ahead of Valley darlings like Twitter.

These are the stories that in one way or another narrated the entire year of innovation in 2011 on the left coast. What were your most memorable moments in Silicon Valley this year? Share them in the comments!

In a 2009 talk, here’s what he has to say about what it’s really like to start a tech company. Watch the whole thing, especially for the part about his conversation with Michael Jackson on a specific moment in the movie “The Wiz”.

Horowitz also discusses what it was like during the dot-com bubble and eventual burst, blaming it on technology not being quite there yet to support all of the great ieas.

It’s a fascinating must-watch for entrepreneurs at any stage of their career.

Silicon Valley is the term used to describe the region in the San Francisco Bay Area home to the world’s largest technology corporations. As Wikipedia says, ‘Silicon Valley refers to the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California’. But now many of the Valley’s hottest high-tech companies are choosing to base their offices in San Fransisco instead of San Jose, Mountain View and Palo Alto.

DropBox, Twitter, Zynga, Airbnb and Square have all chosen San Francisco over the South Bay to house their company offices, many in the warehouse district of SOMA where rent is slightly cheaper than other neighborhoods and the architecture is often large industrial warehouses over Victorian structures.

San Francisco’s Mayor Ed Lee recently announced he would give tax breaks for startups like Twitter and Yelp to keep them in the city and the city’s Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on a proposal that would grant payroll-tax exemptions for companies that relocate to a run-down section of Market Street and the seedy Tenderloin neighborhood nearby.

Many of Silicon Valley’s high growth startups are still coming out of the South Bay — Palo Alto based Stanford, Mountain View based accelarator 500 Startups or Sunnyvale’s Plug and Play give birth to many high-tech startups. A large part of the investment climate is still based towards the south bay, but once the startups are launched they are choosing to live and work in San Francisco.

Venture Capitalist Shervin Pishevar recently launched Menlo ventures based in Sand Hill Road. The firm invested in Techcrunch Disrupt winner Shaker, but chose to base its office in SOMA’s Startuphouse – a new co-working space launching this year.

“San Francisco has a more diverse range of people doing interesting stuff, SOMA particularly has an exciting energy at the moment. It’s like a stack effect, the silicon chip manufactures of the 70′s are based deep in the South Bay, the system manufactures of the first dot.com are based further north around Mountain View and Palo Alto and the high-tech companies of today are up in the city, “says Shaker’s Bear Kittay.

However, once a company grows to a certain size it would have a hard time finding real estate big enough to house its staff. Google recently bought more buildings by its Mountain View based campus and Facebook has outgrown its offices in Palo Alto, moving instead to Sun Microsystems’ old offices based in Menlo Park.

Many of the companies that were booming in the first dot.com era still base their offices in the South Bay. The area is also populated by silicon chip manufactures like Intel which still base its HQ in Santa Clara, and Adobe Systems, founded in 1984 is in San Jose.

Elias Bizannes, co-founder of StartupHouse says the secret to Silicon Valley is the people –

“The relationships made are the secret sauce. Because the cost of innovation has come down so much, younger people are able to start companies so it becomes more about the relationships made and it’s easier to weave the social fabric where there are more like minded people so young entrepreneurs are choosing San Francisco for the lifestyle.

During the first .com boom rental prices got too expensive in Palo Alto so it pushed people up to the warehouse district of SOMA where rent was cheaper. Now the heartbeat of the city’s innovation is in SOMA.”

As many startups move their data storage into the cloud, physical space for servers is also becoming obsolete. And co-founders in the early days are choosing co-working spaces over offices to deal with business.

But there is still plenty of activity happening south with the incubator Black Box Mansion based in Atherton and the accelerator for black entrepreneurs NewMe based in Mountain View. But as entrepreneurs from all over the world flock to Silicon Valley they are choosing San Francisco over the South Bay as the line between work and play becomes more blurred at a time when we are always switched on and available.

Do you think San Francisco is the new Silicon Valley? What do you think are the benefits are of the South Bay over the city?

Arktan is the first startup to build a company powered by Echo StreamServer, a commenting and ratings engine we’ve previously featured, which is the technical backbone for Arktan to seamlessly scale its product in realtime.

“This product comes from the realization that the social web and its existing services like Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, TwitVid, Instagram, etc. are going to be the future of live blogging. It’s the first product to take the social web into the live blogging platform,” says Chris Saad, Echo’s VP of Strategy.

According to Rahul Aggarwal, CEO and Co-Founder of Arktan, this is the first Live Blog product that utilizes such a wide range of social media tools including Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, TwitVid, Instagram, etc. Writers can use the tool to tweet or post from the aforementioned networks and those items are streamed into an embeddable widget on the publisher’s page in realtime.

Arktan’s widget is simply the next evolution of current live blogging tools. It allows writers to say, “OK, I want these three Twitter accounts, this Tumblr and this Instagram account to be the sources for my LiveBlog.” It also lets writers include photos and videos from TwitPic, Yfrog, Tweetphoto, YouTube, TwitVid, and more right in their stream.

Arktan says their platform is designed to keeps visitors on the site with inline media. It gives publishers the ability to pull in nested comments like Facebook comments and @replies from Twitter, which is a first in the industry. All posts are highly social, including the ability for visitors to Like, Reply, Share and Flag.

Publishers can customize the look and feel of their live blog to match the colors, fonts and other styles of their existing website. Multiple journalists can stream onto one platform and moderation and spam detection capabilities are in-built so that site owners can control the conversation.

USA Network uses Arktan LiveBlogging to power Live Blogging on their “Character Chatter” sites to drive user engagement during popular TV shows such as Psych and Burn Notice. Recently, the artist known as Dr. Dre used the LiveBlogging platform to promote his latest album and Newsweek used it for its Oscars 2011 coverage.

It sounds pretty cool to us- we’ll be giving it a whirl at our upcoming The Next Web Conference, taking place April 27th-29th in Amsterdam, Netherlands. More info here.

(Why Do You Do What You Do?)" title="Untitled1 photo" />

In this month’s issue of Wired Magazine, writer Ted Greenwald described the trending Silicon Valley meme, “WDYDWYD or Why Do You Do What You Do?” calling it the “hottest team-building meme since Outward Bound.”

The meme originated in 2004 at Burning Man by artist Tony Deifell who posted photos of strangers answering the questions on the Ning social network. The inspiration behind the meme originated with a call he received late one night from a young student working on a school project. She blurted out, “Why do you do what you do?” Deifell was quite taken a back, and like many people faced with the question, he embarked upon an existential meditation.

I couldn’t get the words out in a clear way. I tried to refigure how to make my answer more essential. I realized I needed to be more deliberate in my choices in the world. It haunted me.

Deifell has since carried WDYDWYD from the festival to the Silicon Valley boardrooms of the National Holistic Institute, Google and Twitter. The site, which he describes as an open-sourced art project, is still growing steadily on Ning.

Student Joe Moloughney founded the WDYDWYD Facebook group, calling it a worldwide community art project with 1,500 members. Their Twitter page has over 1,000 followers. Artists like photographer Bill Kennedy, author/cartoonist Hugh MacLeod and French performance artist Séverine Carminati have all got involved.

But this meme is still primarily just on the West Coast. So, what would the East Coast answer? I asked a few prominent East Coasters, “Why do you do what you do?”

Here are their answers:

“To someday be able to answer this question.”

- Ashley Casselman, Senior Associate at the World Economic Forum.

“I am an insecure short girl from Florida. I never considered myself enough.”

-Laurel Touby, Founder and SVP, mediabistro.com

“I do what I do because of the thrill of discovery. And becuase the world is changing at an incredibly rapid rate, and somebody needs to be there to chronicle it.”

- Seth Porges, an Editor at Popular Mechanics

“I love the Internet, sure, but I mostly do what I do because of the people in my industry. It’s a world of movers, shakers, api-makers. Everyone is smart, and on the cutting-edge of what’s next. It’s simply the most exciting industry to work in, and also the most fun.”

-Soraya Darabi, Co-Founder of Foodspotting.

“Because I can’t stop…and I’m not sure I want to.”

- Julia Kaganskiy, Editor of The Creators Project and Founder of the ArtsTech Meetup.

“Because making the world suck less is SO MUCH FUN.”

- Alexis Ohanian, Co-Founder of Reddit and Head of Marketing for Hipmunk

“I do what I do because I’m a huge nerd. At RJMetrics, we use technology to solve complex, interesting problems for some of the fastest-growing companies in the world. This makes for nerd paradise, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other job.”

-Robert J. Moore, CEO of RJMetrics.

“In my case, the answer comes down to “enlightened self interest”. I am truly focused on the long-term goal of leaving the world a better place than I found it (the wonderful concept of ‘tikun olam’). As a pragmatic capitalist, I believe that can best be done by harnessing the powers of free market forces, and as a believer in democracy, I believe that society then needs to work collectively to tweak the margins to guide humanity in the right direction. As a result, I have created a unique and strange personal world surrounding me…like a high tech PeeWee’s Playhouse. I am an entrepreneur, angel investor, teacher, mentor, speaker, father, futurist and political activist, all of which taken together occupy me 16 hours a day, seven days a week, with an insane work and travel schedule. But I truly believe that I am having more pure fun in life than almost anyone else I know, and this combination of pleasure and purpose is Why I Do What I Do.”

- David S. Rose, Managing Principal of Rose Tech Ventures and founder and Chairman of New York Angels.

What makes our New York answers resemblant of our city? A touch of irony perhaps? A grittier sense of responsibility? A necessity to be edgier?

After asking so many of my peers, I gave it a think. I do what I do because every writer requires inspiration. So my fellow East Coasters, WDYDWYD?
