According to a report from Inside Facebook, people who really hate Timeline and are looking for ways to get rid of it are becoming victims of scams on the social network.

By searching for “remove Timeline” or “disable Timeline” on Facebook, you’ll find a slew of groups and pages promising step by step instructions on how to disable the new Facebook feature that just recently went live for everyone. There’s only one problem, disabling Timeline is impossible, and users who follow these instructions are being scammed.

Some of the scams don’t appear to be harmful, simply dropping you on a landing page asking you to like a few pages and in return your Timeline will magically disappear. Mind you, it seems like an obvious scam to those who are tech savvy, but for people who really don’t understand how Facebook works and don’t like the new feature, they’ll apparently try anything:

While liking things won’t do any technical damage, some scams are asking people to download and install extensions for their browser, and who knows what type of harm that could cause. For example, 14,068 people have liked this page that automatically prompts you to download an extension as soon as you do so:

There’s no way to know how successful these scams have been or what they do to users exactly, but it’s best to keep an eye out for these types of things if one of your friends shares it with you. There’s no way to disable Timeline once you’ve said yes to trying it out, and it will be mandatory in the coming weeks. If you find one of these pages, you can simply click “Report page” in the bottom right hand side to help Facebook get rid of this junk.

If you really despise Facebook, you could always go back to using IE7, which is no longer supported by Facebook.

According to Intego’s Mac Security Blog, scammers are going after Apple users, trying to get their billing information. It’s probably a hot time of year for these phishing attacks, since a lot of people probably got new Apple products for Christmas.

The attack started on Christmas day and have the subject line:

Apple update your Billing Information.

Of course, whenever you get an email asking you to update your billing information, it’s probably a fake. That’s not to say that this attack won’t be successful, with a lot of new Apple customers seeing the email. Apple only asks you to update your account billing in its store and on one of its devices when making a purchase.

This is what the rest of the email looks like:

The email looks legit enough at first glance, but the link that’s in it goes to a random site that isn’t owned by Apple:

This is a common phishing scam which seems obviously fake, but when you take the context and timing of Christmas into account, this attack can be quite successful at massive scale. Imagine your mom using a new MacBook and getting this email today, it might make perfect sense to her that Apple is reaching out, since she just got the new machine.

If you’ve gotten a new Apple product or know someone who did, beware of this scam and remember that your billing information should be guarded with your life.

A Twitter scam app which claims it help you see the people accessing your profile is proliferating across Twitter today, with users being duped into granting access to their Twitter accounts to spread the scam even wider.

The app, named “See Wh0 Viewed Y0ur Pr0file” requests access to a users’ Twitter account via OAuth (an authentication platform that won’t share your sensitive information), sending out two tweets once it has been approved:

WOW! You can see WHO VISITS your TWITTER profile. That’s cool! :) – http://bit.ly/tweetviewer

The second:

I just viewed my TOP20 Profile STALKERS. I can’t believe my EX is still checking me every day – http://bit.ly/tweetviewer

If you see these tweets, DO NOT click them, instead warn the person you follow that they may have granted access to an app that could be used to tweet scam messages. If you do click the link, make sure you do not allow the application to have access your account:

The scam began circulating last week. If you notice the name of the application, the developers have replaced the correct spelling with zeros. When it first appeared, the application was known “See Who Viewed Your Profile” but Twitter quickly disabled the app. Today’s inconvenience is being caused by the same application, but with a slightly altered name.

In a fifteen minute period, the scam app sent out 6972 tweets from Twitter user accounts:

If you have found you accidentally granted access to this application, you can remove it easily. Make sure you are logged into your Twitter account, click Settings and then Connections, making sure to revoke the application’s access.

Scams such as this will make their way across Twitter, just remember to be vigilant. Do not click links you don’t trust and never grant access to a Twitter application unless you are 100% sure it is safe.

Twitter’s Safety team looks to be on the case and will likely have the application removed soon. Del Harvey, a member of the Safety team, tweeted the following message just minutes ago:

Until then, be careful.
