Adobe is developing an upcoming feature for Photoshop that could end the problem of blurred photos forever.

The new feature was demoed at the company’s MAX 2011 event, drawing gasps of amazement from a crowd that witnessed a blurred photo, retouched and perfected in seconds. Advanced algorithms calculate the movements of the camera at the time the image was taken, enabling the user to ‘fix’ the image by unblurring it – saving what would ordinarily be a disappointing, dud image.

As the video – which is unfortunately slightly shakey itself – demonstrates, the process can be used on a photo captured on a mobile device to sharpen the quality and, in the case of text-based images, reveal more data.

Though it was showcased at MAX, Adobe has no official release date for the anti-blur feature, though suffice to say it is likely to get a very warm welcome when it is finally available to the public.

Update: Adobe has an explanation of the technology on its blog where it states that “project is still a prototype and not yet in a product”.

Hate it or love it, the new Gawker layout is a massive change that represents an important moment in blog design. While it is indeed forward-looking, if it is actually usable is a matter up for debate.

However, Gawker was not always so innovative. Their first designs were downright normal. In fact, the first two proposed designs for the website were a bit dull. Here, coming from the designer himself, is the first design submitted to Nick Denton for Gawker in October of 2002:

According to the designer: “Nick [Denton] didn’t like it too much. Background too dark, masthead text not logo-y enough. Two weeks later, I sent him this, with a half-assed technicolor logo that I’d dashed off in Photoshop in like 30 minutes:”

Look familiar? That became the first Gawker design to actually make it into the wild. This is what the site looked like when it was finally launched:

And finally, this is what Gawker looks like today, for better or for worse:

TNW has also gone through big design changes, but with the massively positive response that our current layout has garnered, you have little to fear in terms of us making the site harder to use. Which version of Gawker do you prefer?

It was his way of saying, “I want you to be a part of Project! My new iPad magazine!”

That is why Sir Richard Branson is my favorite billionaire. In case you need further clarification, read the article I wrote about Project’s launch and call for talent here or watch the video below.

Today, Virgin announced the winner of this competition to design the front cover of their crowd-sourced issue planned for early next year – you can see the winning video here. TRON fans, look for the ‘error’ in the video.

The video was made using Photoshop and Motion, by a design psychology consultant and author known on YouTube as “The Motivated Life.”

Secondly, with the iPad set to be one of the top gifts this holiday season, some of Virgin’s key partners are sponsoring Project as a festive gift. Courtesy of Virgin America,, Virgin Blue and Virgin Mobile Canada, issue 1 will be free to all people downloading it between the 23rd and 29th of December. Download your free copy of Project here. Issue 2 will hit the app store on January 7th, 2010.
