Twitter is as global as it gets when it comes to social networking, and the company has been adding official support for new languages pretty quickly as of late. The company has a translation center where it adds requests for its community to localize Twitter in specific languages. Those users then go about doing it on a volunteer basis.

If you’ve never seen the translation center, here’s a look at what users see once they sign up, pick a language, and agree to keeping new features that they might see to themselves:

By adding Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu, Twitter now supports right-to-left languages for the first time. The company says that it currently has 13,000 volunteers actively localizing all of Twitter’s sites, emails, and apps into different languages. It’s a similar approach to how Facebook handles its localization.

Here’s what Twitter had to say today about the efforts of its hard-working volunteers:

Some of these volunteers live in regions where Twitter is officially blocked. Their efforts speak volumes about the lengths people will go to make Twitter accessible and understandable for their communities.

To become a truly global business and product, you have to be accessible globally. With 28 languages under its belt, the company is well on its way to global domination.

Well, thanks to a brilliant new application for the iPhone released by Emirates Airlines you need to wonder no more!

iLingual is a fun little app developed by Lean Mean Fighting Machine for Emirates Airlines, the Award Winning Dubai-based career (yes, the Dubai from the news).

The application is designed to translate some essential phrases from English into French, German and Arabic!

How does it work? Quite simple really. You take a picture of your mouth (or anyone else’s for that matter), iLingual will analyze this, with the support of a complex algorithm no doubt, and prepare it for conversion into an animation.

Now, pick a phrase from any of a library of 400 or so. Hold the phone over your mouth, a must for any self-respecting tourist, and voila: you can now speak flawless French, German or Arabic to get by! Brilliant!

Furthermore, you’re free to choose whether you want a male or female voice and you may also adjust the pitch to match your own!

The video below was taken during the application’s testing in France.

The application is available free of charge, thanks to Emirates Airlines’ sponsorship, from iTunes.

Yamli, which means dictate in Arabic, is a tool that allows you to type in Arabic script without using an Arabic keyboard. An updated version of the popular Smart Keyboard, has just been released. The update, still in Beta, introduces rich text features and an improved interface.

They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, and Yamli is an absolute testament to that. During the war in Lebanon, in the summer of 2006, the team behind Yamli realized that most of the news coming out of Lebanon was in Arabic, and so you needed to type the search terms in Arabic, a daunting task if you don’t have access to an Arabic keyboard!

They also noticed the growing popularity of what they call Arabizi, the use of the Latin script to communicate in Arabic, and so they put two and two together and came up with a brilliant tool that converts your Arabizi into Arabic script.

For example, if you were trying to type Marhaba, or hello in Arabic, you would type “Mar7aba”, and Yamli will convert it to the Arabic script (“مرحبا”). Brilliant.

Welcome to readers of The Next Web

What really impresses me about the tool is the speed with which it handles this task. I could type at my normal pace and the tool would convert it without missing a beat. It also takes a page out of the T9 dictionary’s playbook displaying a list of options as you type.

While I was very impressed with the original tool, I am indifferent about the update but that’s not because of any failing on its part.

The update introduced some interesting features, including support for rich text, but I tend to use Yamli only when I need to type something in Arabic in another tool, so I would export whatever I’ve typed into Word, Powerpoint or Outlook which diminishes the value of those features for me. For others, however, I’m sure that these changes will be a welcome addition to what is already an excellent tool.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Yamli has plug-ins for Drupal, Word Press and FireFox.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think.
