This Guy Accepts PayPal!?!

So why can’t my local bar, movie theatre, supermarket and restaurant accept it? How long will it be before the first bar starts accepting PayPal payments for beer???

  • Fantastic - I am really glad for this homeless guy and hope he gets a lot of donations.

But I really can't help feeling incredibly frustrated by this!

Legitamate South African businessnes can't accept Paypal, which means we constantly have to look for other alternatives. Since everything works with Paypal it has made our lives much harder.
  • I feel your pain, the fact that South Africans are not permitted to accept PayPal payments is total B.S.
  • Especially as the founder of PayPal IS South African, and PayPal was founded IN South Africa!

My understanding though is that it has nothing to do with PayPal, but rather the EXORBITANT fees the South African banks charge. Joy oh joy!

I am not surprised at all!!!! I tried to start a mobile payment gateway between all the fingers of greed in the pie, complicated by the fact that banks actually don't like working together unless one of them actually owns the platform and SARS.. its going to be a really long time before we see the ease of paypal, crappy because imagine how easy it becomes to start a business when everything works and plugs in without pulling your hair out! I think by not allowing paypal, the puppet masters are really hindering what could be a fabulous new economy.
  • oh, I hear ya. I grew up in Manhattan. Homeless was real to me at a young age. My parents taught me to be "smart," but also taught me to think mercy all the time – which does not always been giving money – but also means allowing for the complexities of what has happened to a person meant by God to be a king or queen of this earth that might send them to the street.

  • I think we are all responsible to take care of those who CANNOT take care of themselves. Of course it is hard to know who is gaming the system and who is not unless there is a relationship developed with that person. I think we should rarely give cash (or paypal) to someone that is on the street without our doing our due diligence. However, whenever anyone asks for a donation, I always offer to buy them some food. That quickly tells you whether they are looking for a quick buck for alcohol or drugs or are really in need.

Just had this happen to me the other day at the gas station. Person started a conversation and then came up after to ask for money. Told them I never give cash but would buy them food. What did they want? He quickly moved on to the next "mark". However, I have had the privilege of buying someone food on many occasions. Do I think think they will use their other money for drugs or alcohol? Probably. But I have done my part in that. Of course, if I can bring God into the equation, I will do that as well. Because He is the only one that can truly heal these folks.

  • @Karen/@Jon – I think the biggest challenge for me is to not let a ’strategy’ become an excuse. For example, Jon, I have often handled things the same way you have, but I am embarrassed to say that there have also been times I didn’t do anything because "there’s no place to get food in this scenario" or "it’s obvious he just wants cash, so why bother." or whatever.I really like the way you phrased it, Karen: smart + mercy all the time.
