OnePlus ‘One’ smartphone will ship with a 13MP Sony Exmor IMX214 rear-facing camera

OnePlus today confirmed that its upcoming ‘One’ smartphone will be fitted with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. One Plus founder and chief executive Pete Lau, formerly an executive at Oppo, confirmed his company would be using the Sony Exmor IMX214 CMOS sensor.

In a forum post, he explained the rationale behind this particular component: “After going through almost every single manufacturer and the latest models in the market, we felt that Sony offered the best wide-aperture sensors out there. We were confident that with the proper set of lenses and software optimization, our camera would take beautiful pictures in any situation.”

The sensor offers an f/2.0 aperture, 4K video recording and 720p slow-motion footage at 120 frames per second (FPS). Lau said the team has added a sixth lens to the handset – many other smartphones come with five – to compensate for the distorted edges that often plague low aperture sensors. The front-facing camera, meanwhile, is a 5-megapixel offering.
