Intel to demo dual-core Android smartphones at Mobile World Congress

Intel has revealed plans to show off dual-core, dual-graphics Android smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February.

The chipmaker announced the schedule for its MWC booth, which will run from February 25-28, noting that it will be showcasing smartphones, tablets and ultrabooks.

“Specifically, Intel will showcase its latest smartphone technologies and devices running the Android platform, including a new dual core, dual graphics platform, as well as OEM- and service provider-supported devices based on the company’s new Intel AtomTM Z2420 platform targeted at emerging markets,” the company said in a release.

At CES in January, Intel announced details of its new processor lineup. It outed the Lexington Atom Z2420 “value smartphone” processor, as well as the Clover Trail+ Z2580 dual-core “performance smartphone” chip. The Z2580 is a 32nm SoC featuring the PowerVR SGX 544 MP2 GPU. The Lenovo K900 will make use of the chip, and Intel is expected to announce more handsets at MWC.

Intel may be the undisputed king of PC processors, but it has largely been sidelined during the mobile revolution. It did make some progress last September when it teamed up with Motorola to release the RAZR i smartphone sporting an Intel Medfield chip, but it has yet to see widespread adoption from OEMs.

The company’s emerging market smartphone initiative is just getting off the ground. It recently launched its first smartphone in Africa with the help of Safaricom. Dubbed the “Yolo“, it’s based on Intel’s own smartphone reference design for the Z2420. The company also just announced a partnership with Acer to release a smartphone for emerging Asian markets.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, Intel posted $13.5 billion in revenue and earnings of $0.48 per share.
