In a relatively optimistic statement, RIM’s newly minted CEO Thorsten Heins has stated that he would consider licensing the company’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 software to other manufacturers.
The statement came in an interview with The Globe and Mail. In the interview, Heins waxed enthusiastic about the fact that RIM was about ‘more than handsets’. “I’m happy that we’re not just a handset manufacturer,” Heins told the publication. “It’s this integrated platform.”
He brought up other manufacturers like HTC that have seen terrible financial results lately due to their support of Google’s Android, pointing this out as a reason to ‘go it alone.
He did, however, make sure to stress that he would be open to licensing RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 software to other device manufacturers. Ostensibly this would be offered to other manufacturers that found themselves at arrears due to the low profitability factor of Android.

BlackBerry 10 was recently renamed from ‘BlackBerry BBX’ due to a lawsuit from another Canadian company Basis.
Will we ever see an HTC device running the as-yet-unreleased QNX-based BlackBerry 10 OS? It’s obviously too soon to tell, but it seems more likely now than ever as Heins has quite the mess to clean up at the flagging device maker.
