Microsoft announces Enterprise Mobility Suite for mobile device and cloud management

Microsoft announces Enterprise Mobility Suite for mobile device and cloud management

At an event in San Francisco today, Microsoft announced Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS), a new service that brings together its existing enterprise management solutions, such as Intune and Azure Active Directory, into a “holistic offering.”

Speaking at the event, new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reiterated his emphasis on a mobile-first/cloud-first approach for the company with the tagline “a cloud for everyone on every device.” He highlighted the Enterprise Mobility Suite as a crucial component of Microsoft’s enterprise efforts.

“[The Enterprise Mobility Suite], perhaps to me, is the most strategic piece of what infrastructure development we are doing in support of enterprises,” Nadella said.

Enterprise Mobility Suite will take a comprehensive approach to enabling IT teams to manage devices, identity, access, security and Software-as-a-Service. Azure Active Directory Premium will provide identity and access management when it arrives in April. Windows Intune will cover mobile device and access management, and Azure AD Rights Management Services will offer data protection. The suite will work across Android, iOS and Windows.

The firm’s plans for an updated mobile device management solution were first outed by ZDNet earlier this week.

Microsoft also finally released a full version of Office on the iPad today, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The new apps have a freemium model, allowing free users to view documents and Office 365 subscribers to edit. The company confirmed that it plans to deliver “integrated management capabilities” for Office’s mobile apps in the future.
