Sony boosts its Music Unlimited streaming service with $12 yearly pass for PlayStation Plus members

Sony boosts its Music Unlimited streaming service with $12 yearly pass for PlayStation Plus members

As Sony’s electronics businesses continue to struggle, the company is pulling out all the stops to ensure that it digital offerings don’t suffer the same fate. Today, the company has slashed prices of its music streaming service Music Unlimited, offering PlayStation Plus members a 12-month subscription for just $12/£11.99.

Today, PlayStation Plus members can utilise their subscriptions on the PlayStation Vita,  granting them access to six titles on their handhelds, adding to the 12 titles available for the PlayStation 3. While a monthly subscription to Music Unlimited would cost $9.99, users can sign up for a whole year for little more than one monthly payment — for a limited time.

Prices have been slashed for those who aren’t PlayStation Plus members. The same plan costs $59.99/£59.99 for non-subscribers — a reduction of 50 percent.

Sony is rolling out the offer to consumers in the US, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand.

Sony will attempt to offset the ‘loss’ it makes from the price reductions by up-selling PlayStation Plus subscriptions. It typically costs $18 for three months or $50 for a year, offering 1GB of cloud storage on PS3 and the same on the Vita.

Music Unlimited is Sony’s answer to Spotify, but leans on its own catalog of tracks to build a collection of over 18 million tracks. It can be accessed on any Android smartphone or tablet, iPhone and iPod touch, as well as the PS3, PS Vita, connected Sony Bravia TVs and audio systems.
