If a proxy wasn’t enough for Algeria…

algeriaAlgeria, the 11th largest country in the world, is proposing to create a centralized system that monitors all Internet communications to counter terrorists, hackers and online piracy.

All Internet access in Algeria is already controlled by a proxy that blocks access to pornographic and ‘socially unacceptable’ content. This proposal is to create an additional layer that will be managed by a ‘filtration center’ to monitor information flow in and out of Algeria.

While counter-terrorism acts and anti-piracy laws are always great initiatives in theory, the freedom of speech and privacy of 4.1 million internet users are at stake here.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on this.
