Gowalla’s New Functionality

By Lawrence Coburn on January 23rd, 2008

Lost in our side by side comparisons of Foursquare and Gowalla’s primary screens was the fact that Gowalla rolled in two non-trivial new pieces of functionality:

1) comments on check-ins, and

2) the ability to post photos while checked in at a venue.

Here are some screenshots:

We love both of these moves.

Yelp needed a little competition in the mobile venue photo uploading category, and we’re big fans of “liking” and “commenting” on anything.  Why?  Because it gives an easy, lightweight way for more people to engage with your app, and it sets the stage for the email notification loop.  Comments > Email Notifications > Comments.

You can get a summary of Foursquare’s new stuff here.

But what if you rub your nose, and the computer thinks you meant ‘kill all running apps’? :-)

Sign language is much more difficult to learn than touch typing. Better to compare it with learning Russian. If you start as an adult you’ll never be fluent, so 3x faster input than talking is not going to happen. Additionally, I really doubt whether gesture recognition is easier than voice recognition. Personally I’m hoping for a neural-to-computer interface somewhere during my lifetime.

A fascinating book about sign language is Seeing Voices, by Oliver Sacks.

“in the video the speed of communication via sign language is 3 times as fast as normal speech.”
Yes, I appreciate it. It’s much helpful.
