A buried feature in Google Fonts, called font effects, is an amazing throwback to the days of Geocities and Microsoft’s infamous WordArt for your modern-day website.
You remember what I mean, right? Sites all over the Web that used to feature glorious pages like this:
Font effects can be applied to any Google Web font by adding a class to your code that already loads in your font. Ever wanted to add fire animations to your text just like it’s 2001? Now you can.
There are a number of font effect options available, none of which are any less dated. You can make your font neon, embossed, or even add a nice textured overlay.
I have no idea why this feature exists, but the simple fact that it does is awesome. There are some compatibility issues with Firefox, so check the effect you’re using before you try it out.
Google font effects aren’t new, but I’m hopeful that the discovery of this feature means we’ll see a lot more websites featuring Geocities style text effects all over again, soon.
