After Angry Birds, Rovio dives into publishing with pirate-themed young adult novel

Finnish game studio Rovio, known for its hit mobile game franchise Angry Birds, now has its sights set on young readers. The company is publishing author Mintie Das’ novel The Sinking World late this year.

Part of a series called Storm Sisters, The Sinking World features five young girls aged 11 to 17, who delve into action-filled adventures on the high seas disguised as ‘girl pirates’ in the late 18th century. A second novel titled The Frozen Seas is set to follow.

Das says she drew inspiration from her travels around the world with her family, as her father, an employee with the United Nations, was transferred from one place to another throughout his career.

While Rovio has published books and comics in the past, those drew from the Angry Birds franchise. Storm Sisters is a completely new book-first foray for the Helsinki-based company and it’s interesting to see Rovio taking a different approach to building a new brand.
