Spotify now has 10 million paying subscribers and 40 million active users

Spotify announced today that its music streaming service has hit a new milestone of 10 million paying subscribers and 40 million active users in 56 countries across the world, since its launch six years ago in 2008.

The company says users have created more than 1.5 billion playlists since then, and currently create or update over 5 million daily playlists combined. As part of today’s announcement, Spotify revealed that Eminem is the most streamed artist of all time, wile Rihanna is the most streamed female artist. ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii is the most popular song, having already racked up 235 million streams, while David Guetta is the most followed artist with over 5 million Spotify fans.

Spotify has more than doubled the number of markets it is present in over the past year. It has become more aggressive particularly on mobile, after it started offering a free, shuffle-based version of its music streaming service on iOS and Android, followed finally by Windows Phone last week.

Recently it also finally overhauled its design with a more minimalistic look and a darker theme, as well as refreshed fonts and rounded iconography.
