Google has added a new item to its data portability initiative Takeout today: your original YouTube videos. Takeout is a Google service that allows you to pack up your data on its services and take it elsewhere.
The product was created by the Data Liberation Front, an engineering team at Google whose job it is to make it easy for users to import and export their data from Google’s various products. It’s motto is: “Users should be able to control the data they store in any of Google’s products. Our team’s goal is to make it easier to move data in and out.”
The YouTube tool works very much the same as its other components in the Takeout suite. Just log in, wait for it to analyze your data and download an archive of your videos.
Note that this is only for your personally uploaded YouTube videos, not ones that others have uploaded. The videos are delivered in the identical format that they were uploaded, with no transcoding or changes. You could previously download them one-by-one from the YouTube video manager, but this gives you them in one big chunk.
