This camera lets you shoot real Polaroid film through an iPhone app

The Impossible Project made wave years ago when it touted bringing back Type 600 Polaroid film through an extensive reverse engineering process. Now the company is releasing its own instant film camera – and it’s a fair bit more modern than your might expect.

The I-1 camera accepts either Impossible type 600 film or Polaroid 600 (if you have any lying around – it’s discontinued), which is expected. Less modern are its other features:

  • A ring flash that can change intensity based on ambient light and focus distance.
  • USB charging
  • A Bluetooth-based iOS app with manual control over aperture, shutter speed and more.
  • Remote shooting, effects like double and long exposures.

The camera goes on sale on May 10 for $300 – that’s a bit more expensive than alternatives like the popular Fuji Instax, but the connected features make it worth a look. In the meantime, check out some samples:

Update: The I-1 is now available on Impossible Project’s site for $299.99.
