What’s SUB? Sonos’ new wireless subwoofer. Available from 19 June for €699 (or $699)

What’s SUB? Sonos’ new wireless subwoofer. Available from 19 June for €699 (or $699)

The latest hot item to come out of the delicious Sonos kitchen is the SUB, a wireless subwoofer that (well, evidently) integrates with the Sonos System.

The SUB can be placed anywhere in a room – provided there’s a power source – in pretty much any position, and Sonos promises that the subwoofer will subsequently fill it with clear HiFi bass designed to knock a buyer’s socks off.

Here’s how Sonos eloquently puts it:

“It takes the whole Sonos Wireless HiFi System one seismic step closer to the spine-tingling, jaw-dropping, full-body experience music was meant to be.”

Gotta like the sound of that.

Powering the SUB are two Class-D digital amplifiers that have been tuned to match the speakers and acoustic architecture. The cabinet is made from proprietary resin to “create acoustically dead walls with maximum internal air volume”.

The tech specs go way over my head, but just the look of the thing makes me really want one (see shots below – it’s a thing of beauty). Sorry if this comes across as an ad, but I’m a huge Sonos fan because they’re basically the Apple of sound systems.

The Sonos SUB will be available from 19 June and retail for 699 euros if you want it in a high-gloss black lacquer finish. If you prefer it in black matte, you’ll have to wait until October 2012, but it would also save you cash as the price will be 599 euros.
