Facebook is shuttering Parse, paving the way for Twitter Fabric to reign supreme

It’s a sad day for developers: Facebook is shutting down Parse.

In a blog post, Facebook said it will begin winding the service down immediately, and shutter it entirely on January 28, 2017:

We understand that this won’t be an easy transition, and we’re working hard to make this process as easy as possible. We are committed to maintaining the backend service during the sunset period, and are providing several tools to help migrate applications to other services.

The Parse API will continue to function, though Facebook is also releasing a database migration tool to help developers transition to a MongoDB database. The company is also releasing its open source Parse Server to run an API from a Node.js server.

While the shutdown is unwelcome news, a champion already exists. Twitter’s Fabric toolkit offers much of the same functionality as Parse, and Twitter’s development team has an ongoing series on how to best utilize its tools.
