Facebook passes 1.01 billion monthly users, 604 million mobile users and 584 million daily users

While sharing its financial results for the third quarter, Facebook has announced a number of new milestones: the number of daily active users (DAUs) hit 584 million on average during September 2012, the number of monthly users hit 1.01 billion and the number of monthly mobile users hit 604 million. The former is a 28% increase year-over-year.

As for the financial side, Facebook is reporting revenues of $1.26 billion and earnings per share of $0.12 on a non-GAAP basis. Read more on that here.

CEO Mark Zuckerburg explained his excitement over the number of monthly mobile users:

As proud as I am that a billion people use Facebook each month, I’m also really happy that over 600 million people now share and connect on Facebook every month using mobile devices. People who use our mobile products are more engaged, and we believe we can increase engagement even further as we continue to introduce new products and improve our platform. At the same time, we are deeply integrating monetization into our product teams in order to build a stronger, more valuable company.

The latest numbers follow a big milestone from earlier this month, when Facebook passed 1 billion monthly active users and 600 million monthly active mobile users.

The number to watch is of course mobile: if Facebook can keep growing the number of users it has signing in on phones and tablets, the social network will be able to stay relevant. If not, a mobile social network will swoop in and take over, and Facebook will fall longer but harder than Myspace did.
