The ‘Internet of Things’ can be equal parts terrifying and wonderful, but almost always relies on Wi-Fi to connect its various components. Twilio is hoping to change that with a new program that offers developers the chance to bring 3G cellular connectivity to the home.
Announced today at it’s SIGNAL developers conference in San Francisco, Programmable Wireless starts with a Twilio SIM card. Billing is based on usage, too; pricing starts at $2 per SIM/month, and data charges can be as low as $0.10 per MB measured across devices.
SIM cards also work with Twilio’s voice and SMS features.
Programmable Wireless also has a network partner. T-Mobile is helping encourage the IoT along, and says “by partnering
with Twilio to deliver these capabilities to Twilio’s vast developer network, we support developers in building the cellular-connected solutions of tomorrow.”
In addition to a SIM card, there’s a new Devices API that lets developers provision SIM cards within applications. It can help users control activation, usage and bandwidth limits.
Developers are getting a preview of Programmable Wireless today at SIGNAL, and Twilio hopes to roll it out widely in Q4 2016.
