Google Apps admin toolkit FlashPanel wins the latest API Mashup Contest

The fourth edition of the API Mashup Contest recently drew to a close and the winners are now out of the bag. This contest aimed to highlight commercially strong uses of third-party APIs, and attracted entries from established companies and hobbyists alike.

FlashPanel was crowned the winner. This enterprise-focused service provides a handy toolkit for Google Apps administrators, making it easier to manage users, improve security, monitor users’ activity and automate tasks like enforcing privacy policies or setting email signatures.

The New York-based startup wins a bundle of services worth $5000 and an Amazon Kindle Fire.

Second place went to Giftivo, a Facebook-powered gift recommendation service that uses your friend’s interests to suggest presents you may be interested in. In third was Worldcam, a location-centric Instagram photo viewer. Want to see the latest Instagram shots from Facebook HQ, your local area, or anywhere else? This makes it easy. Music data connections service RichSeam took fourth place. You can read all about it in our review from when it launched. Finally, social video aggregator TVod.me came in fifth place.

A panel of judges assessed the entries, including high-profile angel investor Esther Dyson; Adam DuVander, the Executive Editor at ProgrammableWeb; Rob Spectre, developer evangelist for Twilio; API evangelist, Kin Lane; SEOmoz founding president, Gillian Muessig; Dmitry Namiot, senior scientist at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and me. All winning entries will receive help, including mentoring and links to angel investors.

Even you didn’t enter, it’s still worth keeping an eye on the API Mashup Contest website, which will soon unveil a new design and new services including a newsletter offering tips for new commercially interesting APIs, and a tool helping to find collaborators thanks to a partnership with IdeasWatch.
