Blizzard partners with MOL to expand payment options for its gamers in Southeast Asia

Blizzard, the developer of popular games Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo, has inked a partnership with Malaysian e-payments service provider MOL AccessPortal to expand payment options for players in Southeast Asia.

Gamers in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines can now purchase online games, products and services from Blizzard’s Battle.net using MOLPoints – MOL’s virtual, online currency. The e-payments firm has already made the Blizzard purchase option available on its website.

Instead of buying several game cards to play a variety of games, the MOLPoints system allows gamers to purchase points and pay via more than 680,000 physical, online and mobile channels in 80 countries worldwide.

Blizzard CEO Paul Sams said that MOL has an extensive network of payment channels and knowledge of local markets, which would make it easier for the company to operate across the region.

Earlier this year, MOL Global – which owns MOL AccessPortal – bought majority stakes in Turkish companies PaytoGo and Game Sultan, and also acquired payment distributor AyoPay in Indonesia in an undisclosed deal.

Blizzard has recently been taking steps to steer the professional gaming scene in a new direction. In April, it picked up much of the remains of the short, but well-lived IGNProLeague, soon after it took the reins of the professional Starcraft 2 scene, one of the main esports titles.
