LinkedIn passes 1 million users in Singapore, reaching 20% of the total population

LinkedIn, the business-focused social network, has announced that it has passed one million registered users in Singapore, which becomes the fourth country in Southeast Asia to hit the landmark.

The company says it has doubled its membership in the country since 2011 and, while it has more than 200 million registered users worldwide, the seven-figure user mark is particularly impressive in Singapore since the total population there is just over 5 million. LinkedIn says that its user base covers 70 percent of professional employees and students in the country.

Singapore is a regional business and finance hub for Southeast Asia, and a number of tech firms — including LinkedIn, as well as Google, Facebook and Twitter — have offices there. Since opening its APAC headquarters there two years ago, LinkedIn has grown its staff ten-fold to 90 which its says “reflect[s] the importance of Singapore as a regional hub”.

“This milestone is particularly significant for us,” said Hari Krishnan, LinkedIn’s Managing Director for Asia-Pacific and Japan. “Singapore is increasingly becoming a regional hub for key industry sectors such as financial services, infocomm and media; as a result, skills, innovation, and productivity improvements are the fundamental pillars for success and economic growth.”

Unsurprisingly, IT, banking and financial services are the top three industries for LinkedIn members in Singapore, with Standard Chartered, HP and Google the three companies that are most followed by Singapore-based users.

Elsewhere in Asia, LinkedIn has more than 1 million users in Malaysia, more than 1.5 million in Indonesia and The Philippines. India is its largest Asia Pacific market with 19 million users, followed by Australia (4 million) and China (3 million).
