Japanese carrier DoCoMo expands internationally, sets up shop in Singapore

Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo is expanding its international reach after revealing it will launch a wholly owned subsidiary in Singapore, offering a range of telecom services for Japanese speakers in the country.

The new business is slated to begin operations on January 1 2013, and will be a sales agent of StarHub, the country’s second largest mobile operator.

“DoCoMo Singapore will support Japanese speakers in the local area with sales of mobile phones, cable television and broadband Internet. It will also provide advice in Japanese regarding billing plans, handset use and registration processes,” an announcement explained.

As a result of the launch, the operator’s country office in Singapore will be shuttered after seven years, with DoCoMo Singapore assuming its existing business and responsibilities.

A new support desk will also be opened in Singapore to provide Japanese visitors to the country with advice on all aspects of mobile communication, such as roaming and mobile Internet services.

Despite being a small market with a population of just over 5 million, Singapore remains an important strategic base for many businesses in Southeast Asia. Many of the world’s key financial institutions and multinational companies have a regional base there, and the country is considerably more affluent than its near-neighbors.

DoCoMo has business interests in a range of countries — including India, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan — and it has offices across Asia and in Europe and North America.
