New Hong Kong accelerator for cross-platform mobile startups accepting applications

New Hong Kong accelerator for cross-platform mobile startups accepting applications

AcceleratorHK, a newly-launched accelerator program in Hong Kong designed for startups doing non-native development for multiple mobile devices, is taking applications for its first 3-month program, which will run from November 5th, 2012 to February 8th, 2013.

Applications are due by October 1st, with positive responses promised by October 15th. The accelerator is intended for “early stage startups who believe that the future of mobile is in cross-platform, non-native apps.”

Admitted startups will receive US$15,000, co-work space, mentorship and an education in the “Lean Startup” and “Customer Development” techniques in exchange for between 5 and 8 percent equity.

The program is organized by Stephen Forte, Chief Strategy Officer at Telerik, and Paul Orlando, who created Hong Kong’s first Startup Bootcamp. Telerik, which offers cross platform mobile development tools, is funding and supporting AcceleratorHK. Though accepted startups won’t be required to use Telerik’s products, they will be advised to “give them a serious try”.

AcceleratorHK’s list of mentors includes Matt Meeker, Aaron Skonnard, Cory Kidd, Oscar Ramos, Remi Caron, Stephen Ibaraki, Jochen Kleef, Michael Michelini, Tytus Michalski, Panos K. Kiayias and Richard Campbell.

Forte has offered up a couple tips on Twitter to startups interested in applying.

“Before you apply for #AcceleratorHK, get a technical co-founder (programmer) on board to come to HK for the 3 mos,” he wrote. Participants will be required to stay in Hong Kong for the duration of the program, though there will be a two-week break for Christmas and New Year’s.

Between the Startup Bootcamp and AcceleratorHK, Hong Kong’s startup culture is developing quickly. A recent analysis found the city to have 1.8 percent of the startups in Greater China.
