Clip for iOS lets you create and share 20 second videos with a soundtrack and lyrics

Clip for iOS lets you create and share 20 second videos with a soundtrack and lyrics

If you’re looking to add some pop to your smartphone videos, try shooting with Clip. This new app for iOS lets you add licensed audio and overlay lyrics on top of your own short videos to share with friends.

To create a clip, just search for a song or select one from your iTunes library, and capture a vertically-oriented video up to 20 seconds long by pressing and holding the record button (similar to Vine and Instagram).

You’ll want to also line up the audio to a point where your favorite lyrics kick in. Then, pick a font and color for the lyrics overlay, and then share your creation on Clip’s own network, as well as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As with similar video apps, Clip lets users like and comment on videos, and use the Discover feature to spot the best ones around.

This new app, built by Musixmatch, presents an interesting way to make use of the company’s massive library of 9.3 million lyrics in 39 languages. An Android version is in the works and should be out soon.

I took Clip for a spin this morning and found it to be very easy to use, and the addition of a song and lyrics does make for cooler videos of memorable moments.

Once you’ve picked a track to use, Clip lets you scrub through a waveform to a point where you want the music to begin playing in your video. It also marks the waveform with dots to help you spot sections that feature vocals. Plus, you don’t even need to flip your phone to shoot, as Clip works best with vertically-shot videos.

Clip is available now for free in the App Store.
