Software developer Vito Technology already has a roaring success on its hands with Star Walk, the uber-popular stargazing app that launched back in 2008 and won an Apple Design Award two years later.

10 million downloads on (iOS and Android), Vito has lifted the lid on a brand new standalone app called – wait for it – Star Walk 2.

The basic principle remains the same for the sequel: you can find and identify stars, satellites, and comets in real time, simply by holding your device up to the sky. However, the revamped incarnation has had a big makeover with fresh artwork depticing constellations, while it has also been made faster and given a new soundtrack too. She’s a beauty.

As with its predecessor, Star Walk 2 is $2.99 to download, and there are in-app purchases that gain you access to 3D models of planetary nebulae, man-made satellites, comets, and more. Also, while the original Star Walk app was available for iPad, Star Walk 2 is universal, meaning this one app is optimized for both tablet and phone form factors.

We’re told that Star Walk 2 should be arriving for Android later this year.
