Pocket for iOS updates to version 5.0 with smart Highlights and shareable reading preferences

Pocket has announced version 5.0 of its read-it-later app with a new Highlights section that intelligently sorts your content and a preferences feature that helps third-party apps and sites recommend content that you’ll like.

The iOS app has already received the update, while the Android version is scheduled to arrive on November 20. Pocket is rolling out Highlights in stages, though, so the feature will gradually become available to all users in “the coming weeks.”

Pocket uses Highlights to sort your saved content into categories, including Best of, Trending, Long Reads and Quick Reads. The filters are meant to make it easier to choose the right content when you have some free time. As you use the app, Highlights will adapt to what you like and serve up personalized categories.

Version 5.0 also includes a redesigned navigation menu, enhanced search and new video tiles.

Pocket Preferences is a new service that allows third-party apps and websites to tap into your reading preferences in order to better recommend content to you. Zite is integrating with the feature starting today, followed by HackLater next week.
