Skype updates Mac app with click to call in Safari and revamps user profile view

Skype updates Mac app with click to call in Safari and revamps user profile view

Skype on Thursday released a new version of its native Mac application. Skype 6.1 for Mac has added a click to call feature and revamped the user profile view. You can download the new version now directly from Skype.com.

Click to call allows you to dial numbers from Safari on your Mac. This means being able to call a phone number or send an SMS to numbers listed on sites you visit with Safari. You can also add the number to your Skype contact list and then dial it later. Here’s how Microsoft pitches the feature:

Stop wasting time retyping numbers from the web into your mobile phone or landline. You can now switch between browsing the internet and making calls with just one click.

Save money too. Our local business partners are picking up the cost of your calls to them, so many numbers are now free for you to call with Skype Click to Call installed. Look for numbers across the web marked ‘free’.

The new feature for Mac requires a separate download, however: Skype Click to Call. You can read more about using it over at the FAQ page.

The improved user profile view for Mac meanwhile means your account page “is now easily accessible via your profile view.” Skype has made it easier to navigate as well as update your profile and account details. Here’s how it looks:

Last but not least, Skype has fixed a few bugs in this release. While the company rarely ever details them, this time it actually mentioned one: “In Preferences, Growl is not selectable and Skype reverts back to built-in notification.”

As you can tell, this is a small but significant update to Skype for Mac. The last update, version 6.0 released in October, was in conjunction with the Windows app update, which tightened Microsoft and Facebook account integration.
