Sometimes it’s nice to stop and take stock of how far a service or app has come. Today’s trip down memory lane comes by way of Foursquare, which has posted screenshots of the first prototype of its location check-in service from four years ago today.

Four years ago was a different world. The iPhone was little more than a year old and the App Store ecosystem was just beginning to take shape. So, while this design certainly looks dated, most other apps would too if we compared them.

The service recently added ratings for locations that will bring it into competition with Yelp and other recommendation engines. Another huge addition for the service is the Explore feature, which is now open to all visitors of its website.
