Apple now lets you buy text message and alert tones from your iOS device

In addition to the expected launch of iOS5 and the latest version of OS X, Apple has a few surprises up its sleeve today. One of which is a store for buying tones to use when you receive text messages or alerts.

It’s built into the on-device iTunes app, offering “an incredible spectrum of music ringtones and alert tones that can be assigned to any alert setting on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.”

As MacRumors reports, ringtones are priced at $1.29 and alert tones are $0.99. While Apple has offered ringtones for some time, the selection of alert sounds on iOS devices used to be dire. With this new section of the iTunes Store app, you can give your text messages and other alerts some personality – even if you have to pay for it.
