Facebook Chat Coming to Gtalk, Jabber Imminently

By Zee on November 5, 2009

c6b35 googletalkfacebookapplication Facebook Chat Coming to Gtalk, Jabber ImminentlyFacebook Chat’s integration with Jabber/XMPP is just around the corner which means you’ll be able to use applications like Gtalk to communicate on Facebook.

According to ProcessOne the launch is imminent as their bot on IMTrends has indicated the XMPP software stack has been deployed on chat.facebook.com.

Once launched, Facebook will allow chat applications like Gtalk to let their users communicate with their friends, see which of their friends are online and view their profile pictures as well as set their statuses.

With Facebook giving their 300 million users access to the protocol it will mean XMPP becoming the most popular instant messaging protocol on the planet.

XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) was developed by the Jabber open-source community in 1999. It’s an open, XML-based protocol originally aimed at near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM) and presence information. It’s most recent claim to fame, Google Wave.

Google Wave’s federation protocol is an open extension to the XMPP protocol.

Thanks Sam.

Last year, Facebook had revealed that they were developing a Jabber/XMPP interface for Facebook Chat. If Process One is right, then the public unveiling of XMPP integration in Facebook Chat may not be too far away.

XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol and was developed by the Jabber open-source community in 1999. Google Talk is one of the most popular XMPP based instant messaging clients. Google Wave’s federation protocol is an open extension to XMPP.

Recently, Facebook Chat client was spotted by IMtrend’s bot. This indicates that Facebook has already deployed the XMPP software stack on chat.facebook.com. Once launched, you will be able to chat with Google Talk (and Orkut) friends using Facebook Chat. This would make XMPP the most popular IM protocol on the web and lend even more mass appeal to Facebook.

Yeah i use google talk all the time , all reason gtalk become famous was when friends where added onto gtalk list from orkut directly….

you wont find those rich features in gtalk like the ones you find in MSN , but its simplicity is what keep gtalk goin!

  25. I recently gave up with Digsby as it uses so much RAM (150 MB at least) and went back to Trillian which I used before I’d heard of it. Trillian Astra is so much more efficient – around 15 MB RAM usage and very little CPU despite being connected to about 10 different services. Shame it doesn’t support LinkedIn and MySpace as yet.
