Uber drives into Africa after launching its private car service in Johannesburg

Private car hire startup Uber‘s international expansion plans have kicked up a gear after it launched in Johannesburg, South Africa, taking the service into Africa for the first time.

Uber drove into Asia this year — where it is currently in three cities — and it is also operational in Europe and, of course North America. The company has been hinting at plans to launch in Africa, based on a series of job vacancies which also show an ambition to move into Latin America and the Middle East.

Uber Johannesberg is initially in a testing phase, so we can probably expect a full launch in just over a month. The company is also hiring in Cape Town, South Africa, and Nairobi, Kenya, which look like the locations where it will next launch in Africa.
