$5 for 20gbyte is $125 per year for a 500 gbyte hard disk. And it is only the price which people CAN use. They normally use only 20% if they buy it so that’s $625 for a 500gbyte hard ($90 to buy it) per year. Even with backup in place that is good margin.

From my understanding of reading the pages linked in the article this can only be used for GMail and Picasa Photo storage. Is that right? It’d be handy if it was for any documents or files but for now I don’t think I’ll be upgrading…!

Not sure how are you equating physical hard disk storage with online storage. Aside from backups, you obviously cannot run programs or load documents from online storage solutions.

Online storage is used mainly for backup or sharing purposes. You still need active files to be stored locally, and those account for the lion’s share of hard-drive storage for most people.
