Are you satisfied?

For years, I’d groaned, wished, even prayed for, a computer that would just work, and when I finally decided to buy a mac just three years ago, although not perfect, I was finally satisfied. With mobile devices, it’s been a slightly longer journey.

It was the day I got my hands on a Nokia 6600, years ago, that I began to groan, wish and pray for that ideal mobile phone. The 6600 would let me take photos with a 0.3mp camera, record crappy video but also listen to music, but that was enough for me to begin envisaging what the future could hold. I’d got my first taste of what could actually be possible in a handheld device, and although a wonderful moment, it lead to years of time and a great deal of cash, researching and buying phones that I thought would finally tick all the ‘must have feature’ boxes I’d created in my mind.

I wanted it to be able to store not just photos and music, but video and documents too. In fact, I wanted my ideal device to store virtually any file I decided to shove onto it. Not just that, I wanted to be able to take quality photos, shoot presentable video, record audio and play them all back in near perfect quality. The device also had to include a decent PIM so I could keep track of my appointments, events and manage my contacts nice and easily (syncing of these online and between devices would be a huge bonus). Finally, but most importantly, it had to be able to make phone calls.

I should have known that it would be the same company who satisfied my computer needs, that would end up coming the closest to satisfying my mobile ones. Upon the release of the iPhone, I knew I was closer than ever to that device I’d fallen asleep wishing for. God I was excited. But, expectedly, I still wasn’t satisfied, the camera wasn’t up to scratch, there was no video, it was rather slow and battery life was poor.

Yesterday upon a random visit to the Apple Store, o2 made my day, and told me (for a small fee), I would be able to upgrade to an iPhone 3GS. JOY. I’d literally been asking people on Twitter and Friendfeed the night before what issues they felt the iPhone 3GS had. The responses were surprising to say the least. The most common issue, “I wish it had HD Video” !?!?

The last 24 hours, I’ve come to realise the iPhone 3GS has left me well and truly satisfied, and I’m not sure that’s entirely a good thing. Part of me feels that everything from now and beyond will be a bonus, a gift, something that I don’t really want but would be nice to have. That said, I’m not complaining. I am satisfied after all and have Apple to thank. In regards to what I dream of falling asleep, aside from my wife to be, it’s the iTablet.

Update: in case you’re wondering how I satisfied the battery life aspect of the iPhone 3GS. I bought a Mophie.
