TechFlash stopped a random selection of people outside Seattle public library and asked “What is the name of Microsoft’s new search engine?”. The responses may just surprise you.
As mentioned in the video, it’s worth comparing this to when the same news site asked a random selection of people the exactly the same question back in April.
Microsoft may just have something going here. Bing is currently the fastest-growing U.S. search engine among the top 10, according to a Nielsen report released Monday.
The total amount of searches on Bing rang in at 1.1 billion for the month of August, a leap of 22.1 percent over July, winning Microsoft a 10.7 percent share of the search engine market.
That said, Google remained in the top spot with a commanding 64.6 percent share, accounting for 7 billion searches in August, a gain of 2.6 percent over July.
On a side note, since when are there so many attractive females in Seattle? I reckon Todd (the interviewer) took the opportunity to chat to a few pretty girls. Can’t blame him.
On another side note, if you haven’t seen random people being asked what a browser is in Times Square, you need to see this.

It’s a weird battle for brain positions, as it’s a race between two such huge corporations – it’s almost a bit like there’s no fun in it :-)
Interviewer used too many leading questions. Would be more fun to see done in deep south USA.
Hot girls?
Asking “What is MICROSOFT’s Search Engine?” is kinda stupid. You are asking how well the BING brand is tied to Microsoft, not how aware of it. You should ask if they could name some search engines and see if BING is mentioned. Bing isn’t marketed it as “BING by Microsoft” it is just “bing”.
Bing is being market as the next generation decision engine that should pose a challenge to current search engine strategies. The Bing brand has been launched successfully. Does it really matter if Bing is being marketed as Bing by Microsoft or just Bing? What matters is it is a brand with a vision for decision engine motto.
I have compiled some statistics and social media strategies over the web for Bing. Bing is pretty much straightforward.
Bing = aide you in decision
Google = you have to digg it up piles and piles of links to find what you want. let not knowing if its what you really need.
