Aria you kidding? Twitter opera planned

Royal Opera House http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Royal_Opera_House_and_ballerina.jpgTwitter is, it seems, taking over every part of society. It appears that even the world of opera isn’t immune to the power of 140 characters.

London’s Royal Opera House has announced it is to crowdsource the plot for a new opera as part of its ‘Ignite’ season. By using the hashtag #youropera you can submit your own ideas for the direction the story will take. Judging by some of the submission already, this could be one strange opera.

Recent submissions include:

  • “The ginger cat sings an aria urging people never to stop feeding the pigeons, for they are his food”
  • “Don’t stop believing. Hold on to that feeling. Streetlight people, Wo-oh-oooooooooooooooooh”
  • “Scene 2, Dr Doolittle is fitting a virtual reality headset to a genetically modified, glow-in-the-dark, push-me-pull-you…”

Luckily (or perhaps, sadly) not all submissions are being used. You can see how the plot is currently standing here.

Meanwhile, it’s not just Twitter that’s going highbrow. The Royal Opera House is also using mobile podcasting service AudioBoo during the Ignite season, which aims to get ‘normal people’ involved with the creative side of opera.
