Interesting post, thanks for that.

I heard about the Squarespace and Habitat fiascos but must admit by the time I saw the trending topic of Moonfruit, it just confused me. I assumed someone had discovered a moonfruit cures mortality.

Obviously, you can't police this sort of thing, but I did feel exasperated when I saw someone using a variety of the popular hashtages to entreat me to go click on her ads as she was a poor student. Sorry, love, you'll have to get a bit more creative than that. I was only sorry I wasn't following her so I could have the pleasure of unfollowing and getting her off my radar.

Apart from that sort of relatively infrequent abuse, I think hashtags are fine and useful.

Some stes running contests tell users to hashtag their name so they can choose their winner. Is there a suggestion of how they can run the contests without asking people to hashtag their name?
Everyone wants to be a winner :)
If there are things like this(using hashtags) that bother so many people, why are they on twitter? Why are they on the public timeline and not just in a private little group?

As a library district who has many staff eager to tweet about services, books, events, etc. - we use hashtags in a different way. Each staff has their own hashtag to identify themselves - and we all use the same organization Twitter id. This allows us to reach one big audience and identify who sent what tweet, in cast there is a need for followup. So far - it is working great...but we know it isn't the 'true intent' of how hashtags are to be used.
